Faithful in the Background

Scripture: Colossians 4:7-9 (NLT)

"Tychicus will give you a full report about how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper who serves with me in the Lord’s work. I have sent him to you for this very purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you. I am also sending Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, one of your own people. He and Tychicus will tell you everything that’s happening here."

Reflection

At first glance, the final section of Colossians might seem like just a list of names, but when I look deeper, I see something beautiful—the faithfulness of those who served behind the scenes.

🔹 Faithfulness Matters – Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, and others weren’t in the spotlight, but Paul called them faithful and beloved. Sometimes I may feel unnoticed in my service to God—whether in parenting, leading, or simply being an encouragement to others—but this passage reminds me that God values faithfulness more than recognition.

🔹 Encouragement is Powerful – Paul sent Tychicus and Onesimus not just to deliver a letter but to encourage the Colossians. Encouragement is a vital ministry. I don’t have to be a preacher to make a difference—my words, prayers, and presence can strengthen others in their faith.

🔹 God Redeems My Past – Onesimus was a runaway slave (Philemon 1:10-16), but now Paul calls him faithful and beloved. His story reminds me that God can transform my past mistakes and use me for His purpose. No matter where I’ve been, God’s grace can turn my life around.

🔹 Community Matters – Paul ends his letter by mentioning many names, showing that Christianity is not a solo journey. I need godly friendships, accountability, and people who will walk with me in faith. Am I surrounding myself with people who strengthen my walk with Christ?

Application

✅ I will remain faithful in my calling, even if no one sees it.
✅ I will be intentional in encouraging others, knowing it strengthens the body of Christ.
✅ I will trust that God can use my past for His glory.
✅ I will invest in godly friendships and community.

Faithfulness in the background
is just as important as
faithfulness in the spotlight
—God sees and values both.
