Honoring God in Marriage

Colossians 3:18-19 (NLT)

"Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly."

Reflection

Marriage is one of the most sacred relationships God has designed. In Colossians 3:18-19, Paul gives a balanced instruction—wives are called to willingly submit, and husbands are commanded to love without harshness. These principles work together to create a Christ-centered, loving marriage.

🔹 Submission is about trust, not control. The Greek word hupotassō means "to willingly yield", not to be dominated. A wife’s submission is an act of faith, choosing to honor God's design in marriage.

🔹 Husbands are called to love sacrificially. The Greek word for love (agapaō) here means selfless, Christlike love—not just emotion, but action. A husband is to cherish, protect, and lead in a way that mirrors Christ’s love for the church (Ephesians 5:25).

🔹 It is a relationship of mutual respect. Submission and love go hand in hand. A wife submits as an act of trust, and a husband leads with sacrificial love. When a husband loves his wife deeply, submission is a response of trust, not a burden.

🔹 Harshness destroys what love builds. Paul warns husbands not to be harsh—whether in words, actions, or attitudes. Love must be patient, kind, and full of grace (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). A husband’s tone and treatment shape the security and peace of the home.

🔹 It strengthens my faith. Marriage, at its best, is a reflection of Christ’s love. When I choose to honor God’s design, whether as a husband or wife, I am growing in faith, obedience, and love.

Application

✅ If I am married, I will seek to honor God in my role—whether in leading with love or supporting with trust.
✅ I will see submission as an act of faith, not a sign of weakness.
✅ I will ensure my words and actions build my spouse up, not tear them down.
✅ I will pray for my marriage (or future marriage), asking God to build it on love, respect, and unity.
✅ I will submit my entire life to Christ first, allowing Him to shape my heart in all relationships.
