Freedom from Judgment: Living by Grace

Scripture: Colossians 2:20-23 (NLT)

"You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 'Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!'? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires."

Reflection

I know that my salvation is through Christ alone, not through following religious rules. But as I reflect on this passage, I realize that I may have unknowingly judged myself and others based on outward actions rather than the heart.

🔹 Letting Go of Self-Judgment – There have been moments when I felt like I wasn’t “good enough” as a Christian because I wasn’t meeting certain expectations—whether my own or those of others. But Paul reminds me that true holiness is not about following man-made standards but about my relationship with Christ.

🔹 Seeing Others Through Grace – I may have unknowingly looked at others through a lens of tradition, expecting them to act or look a certain way to prove their faith. But Jesus sees the heart, and so should I. Outward appearance or strict rule-following does not define a person’s walk with God—their faith does.

🔹 True Transformation Comes from the Inside Out – Paul warns that strict religious discipline looks wise but does not actually change the heart. Instead of measuring faith by actions alone, I need to focus on heart transformation—both in myself and in how I see others.

🔹 Walking in Freedom, Not Comparison – My journey with God is unique, and so is everyone else’s. Instead of comparing my faith to others or feeling pressured to meet external expectations, I will focus on growing in Christ personally and encouraging others to do the same.

Application

✔ I will stop judging myself by religious standards and walk in the grace of Christ.
✔ I will extend grace to others, remembering that God sees the heart, not just actions.
✔ I will focus on heart transformation, not just outward appearances.
✔ I will live in freedom, knowing that my faith is about Christ, not rules.

Grace, not rules
defines my faith
I will see myself and others
through Christ’s eyes.
