Understanding Colossians 3:24 – The Meaning of "Inheritance"
📖 Colossians 3:24 (NLT)
"Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ."
Original Context of This Verse
Paul was addressing Christian slaves in the Colossian church. In the Roman world, slaves had no rights to an inheritance because they were considered property. However, Paul reminded them that in Christ, they were not just servants, but heirs of God’s kingdom.
This was a radical statement! Even though they might never receive land or wealth on earth, God had promised them a far greater inheritance—eternal life in His kingdom. Paul was shifting their perspective from earthly rewards to the eternal reward that Christ gives to all who serve Him faithfully.
Does "Inheritance" Mean a Literal, Physical Reward?
No, Paul was not referring to material wealth or earthly possessions. The "inheritance" here refers to:
✔ Eternal life – The greatest reward for those who follow Christ (Romans 8:17).
✔ The kingdom of God – A place where believers will reign with Christ (2 Timothy 2:12).
✔ Heavenly treasures – A reward for faithfulness that cannot be taken away (Matthew 6:19-20).
For the Colossians, this was a powerful encouragement. Even if they were mistreated or had no wealth on earth, they could serve with joy because they had a secure inheritance in Christ.
What does this mean to Me?
Sometimes, I get discouraged when my hard work goes unnoticed. Whether it’s in my job, my family, or my ministry, there are times when I feel unappreciated. But Colossians 3:24 reminds me that I am not working for human approval—I am serving Christ. And He has promised me something greater than anything this world can give: an eternal inheritance.
🔹 God Sees My Faithfulness – Even when people don’t recognize my efforts, God does. He sees my late nights, my sacrifices, my obedience—even the small things no one else notices. I don’t need applause because my reward comes from Him.
🔹 My Inheritance is Secure – Earthly rewards are temporary. Promotions, financial success, or recognition will all fade, but what God has for me is eternal. The world may not give me what I deserve, but in Christ, I am an heir of His kingdom (Romans 8:17).
🔹 I Work for Christ, Not for People – Whether I’m at my job, serving at church, or helping my family, my real Boss is Jesus. That means I should do everything with excellence, integrity, and joy, knowing that I am ultimately working for Him.
🔹 I Can Serve with Joy, Even in Hard Times – Paul wrote this verse to people who were slaves—who had no inheritance or earthly rewards. If they could serve with hope, knowing God had something greater for them, then I can do the same. No matter what my circumstances are, I have a reward waiting for me in Christ.
Application

✔ I will shift my focus from earthly rewards to my eternal inheritance.
✔ I will do my work as if I am serving Christ Himself, not just people.
✔ I will trust that God will reward my obedience, even if I don’t see it now.
